WHO CAN JOIN THE CLAN MATHESON SOCIETY?The Clan Matheson originated with the Highlanders who gave their allegiance to the MacMathan Chief in and around Lochalsh, Wester Ross. The early days of the Clan saw people using a variety of names, such as MacMaken, MacMakan and MacMhatain. Over the course of time, the anglicised version of Matheson emerged. However, due to the translating and spelling difficulties experienced by Gaelic speakers when keeping their records, other similar-sounding variations crept in.
Today, for you to qualify for membership of the Clan Society, you or one of your parents should have been born with one of the accepted surnames or a similar-sounding one. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate your Highland origin, convince the Chief or his Lieutenants of your enthusiasm for the Clan and be prepared to give your allegiance to the Chief. Membership will entitle you to wear the Matheson tartan and the Chief’s crest badge.
Subject to a demonstrable Highland origin, the following surnames are eligible for Clan membership (as mentioned above, other similar-sounding surnames may also be considered):

If you would like to join the society and qualify under the above rules, you can access an application form from your country branch webpage. Alternatively, you can use the application form below. If you live in England, Scotland, Europe or South Africa, you can also download an application form here. Please complete as much of the form as possible, since this will help the Clan genealogists authorise your appointment and will contribute to the mass of Clan knowledge that they are piecing together.
